My client and I didn’t feel finished. Something was off about her bedroom, her sleeping space. She didn’t feel finished, even after we found easy solutions for furniture placement and decided to remove her pile of work-related books. So, we experimented with writing practice, asking what her bedroom needed from her. Through this process, she read what she’d written out loud and found her own answers. Though we had adjusted her space, she wrote about the need to clear her mind of work and worry before she even entered her bedroom to rest and heal for the night. I gave her an easy breathing and focus practice to use before bed. The desire to further clear out more books came to her as she wrote. With wisdom from our time together and her own inner guide, the needs wrote themselves and were answered.

Connect your self and your space with a bridge of words. Writing? Yes, you are a writer. We are all writers as we bring our insides to the outside with writing practice. Connection? Why. Whether you walk into a space and want to immediately exit or to stay as long as you can, you are affected by physical environment on conscious and unconscious levels. Connecting to and understanding space is a way to create your own space to suit you and your lifestyle.

Writing practice is an easy way to connect to yourself and to witness your mind without attachment, judgement, the saboteur, or the inner critic. Writing practice is a bountiful yet neutral land, no good and no bad, where you can let your thoughts and words flow freely. The basics of writing practice are so very basic – fast writing pen, paper (any paper, scrap paper, school notebook paper), and your open mind. Keep your hand moving. Your mind and writing flow with or without punctuation or spelling perfectly. Your mind comes to paper without editing or fixing. Connecting self and space, directed writing practice is a helpful tool in Feng Shui.

She did report back to me shortly after our changes. Less busy-mind at night, less waking up worrying, deeper sleep and no more toe- (or mind-) stubbing on bookshelves. Combine writing practice with Feng Shui principles for another path to creating balanced, purposeful space.

Recap of the FSIM Summer Solstice Event
by Ellen Johnson, FSIM Board member

It was so much fun getting together at Debbie Miller's home and also via Zoom to hear from Carole Hyder about her experience in moving house using the principles from her book, Conversations with your home. Carole recounted that she was reluctant to move, and her husband, Tom, was spearheading the move. They had many long talks and started looking for senior housing options. Many of the locations they looked at, they didn't even need to go beyond the front door and knew they weren't a fit.

After much looking they heard about some senior housing going up at the location of the former Ford Motor plant in St. Paul. It didn't hurt to put their names on the list, so they did just that. Soon after, they were asked to commit and they figured that since it was a rental they didn't have to have a long-term commitment, so they went for it.

They had nine months to prepare to move from their home of many years to their new, smaller home. Carole began going through her things, a little every day. They started selling things they knew they wouldn't be able to take with them - and had many heart-warming stories about how delighted the new owners of their things were! Those items were getting a new life, some of which hadn't been used in years!

During the whole process, Carole still wasn't excited about moving; she loved her home and was very resistant to moving. Where would everything fit, and how will she be able to continue her artwork, etc.? All valid questions. Carole's metal energy clicked in and on her scaled drawing of the new space, she added miniature cut outs of all the major furniture they knew they wanted to keep to make sure it would all fit. At this point, the building was still in process of being built, so she couldn't even see the space itself. It's a good thing Carole has so much experience with floor plans!

On moving day, as they took the last of their belongings out of their home, Carole and Tom did a ceremony, leaving the home through the front door on a red carpet. That was the last time Carole was in their home while they still owned it.

Now Carole and Tom aren't the only ones that have experiences in their former home - many of Carole's students have celebrated their Feng Shui graduations at her home. Also, they had purchased the home from Barbara Everett, who had used the home as a Spiritual Center. Cheryl Larson, a former FSIM Board member, mentioned that she had taken classes in the home at that time, and how special it was for her to help Carole and Tom transition from their home.

Carole is still in the process of connecting to her new home. She hasn't been able to complete the Archetype Questionnaire from her book, Conversations with your home; it didn't feel right yet. However, now that they're there, they love it! Carole even has a wonderful space to create and store her artwork, with plenty of natural light!

The new owners of Carole and Tom's home were a perfect fit! As some of you know, Tom is a Master Gardener and they had an amazing garden - and the new owners are gardeners; I'm sure their former home will appreciate the continued beauty outside it's doors!

Some conversation followed about clutter clearing and some of the messages about clearing from Carole and others were (and some things I'm telling myself) :
  • I don't miss anything that I got rid of.
  • Your children will thank you for going through your stuff.
  • If you don't use it or love it, someone else may be thrilled to have it.
  • You'll feel so much lighter getting rid of things.
  • Your space really does reflect your life - where in your life are you struggling, and can you make changes in your space to reflect the life you want?
  • What is your inspiration for clutter clearing?

Listening to Carole's talk has inspired me to continue my clutter clearing process so that I'll have fewer decisions to make when it's time for me to move. There's no time like the present!
