November 2019

GRATITUDE!

In the month of November for the past couple of years I've been part of a group that practices gratitude. It's been a wonderful way to keep focused on all of the good things in my life, and makes me slow down and really appreciate everyone and everything I have in my life. The more I focus on gratitude, the more grateful I am.

Ellen Johnson

Some time ago I read the book "The Magic" by Rhonda Byrne, which is all about Gratitude. One of the practices that she shares in the book that I love is to use a gratitude rock. I have a beautiful hearted-shaped rose quartz on my night stand that I hold onto each night as I go to bed and think of all of the things I'm grateful for that day. Sometimes I finish and put my gratitude rock back on the night stand, other times I wake up with the rock in bed in the morning. Either way, it's a wonderful way to end my day!

With heartfelt gratitude to everyone in our FSIM community!

Feng Shui Magic
~Nancy Baxter

Feng Shui often has an interesting way of revealing hidden issues or barriers. Such was the experience with one of my clients.

She proudly escorted me from room to room, pointing out the numerous and lavish changes their family had done since moving into the home. She included ideas for a rather expansive addition off the back of the house.

She loved to watch television makeover shows and each room she took me to was absolutely stunning, like a magazine photoshoot. She repeatedly mentioned, however, how much she hated her front door, which was located in the career area of the bagua, and how she wanted to move it.

She spoke of her passion for making films and how happy she had been when she had started her own video-making industry when they had lived in Iowa. She now felt somewhat stifled as a stay at home mom. As we stood in the career area of their house, I became aware of how dull and lifeless the front entry was compared to the rest to the house.

We were just discussing the effects of clutter, when she opened the nearby closet to reveal a jumble of boxes, cartons and envelopes crammed to the ceiling. These containers held all of her career items from when they had lived in Iowa!  Hidden away in this closet, her past career endeavors were effectively blocking or stopping up her future opportunities!

It's wonderful how Feng Shui works in our lives!

I truly believe I have been involved in Feng Shui my entire life. I loved order and harmony as a young child. Keeping things simple, clearing clutter, creating sanctuary and being intentional have been my mottos all along.

In 2001, an invitation came to me to join a friend at the Carondolet Center where a Feng Shui expert was going to speak. Soon after that meeting, I enrolled in the Wind Water School, was accepted and began my journey diving deeper into understanding Feng Shui. After graduating from Carole Hyder's class in 2003, I started a business of consulting and teaching Feng Shui. And a few years later, I enrolled and graduated from a master class.

On a personal note, my husband and I celebrated 50 years of marriage in June of 2019. We have a son, Jay who lives and works in Seattle and a daughter, Jodi who lives 8 blocks from us with her husband and their twin 3 yr olds. Our grandchildren, Timothy and Jane bring such joy to our lives.

I retired twice! Once from being a director of education and then from being a mentor coordinator for scholarship program in Minneapolis.   I volunteer with Common Hope, a non-profit agency that supports children and families in Guatemala and with the South High School Foundation in Mpls - with their scholarship program.

Also, for the past 12 years, a friend and I started a seasonal business around holiday time. We make holiday pots, swags and wreaths.

FSIM President, Elaine Anderson, approached me a few years ago and asked if I would like to serve on the board. It took a year or two for me to say yes. By serving on the board, I have been able to meet several FSIM members whom I really hadn't known before. The board works diligently to make our organization a viable one. I look forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of this wonderful group and to meeting more members and friends of FSIM.

Looking forward to 2020.
